When the Brothers Griiin joined the Flaming Lips in 2014, they became something more than the sum of their parts. The Brothers, in-demand drummers Nicholas Ley and Matthew Duckworth Kirksey, soon leveled up their Lips partnership to include DJing wild parties and remixing and producing other artists. Kirksey and Ley, however—with decades of involvement in Oklahoma’s music scene between them—couldn’t resist the call of original music for long and set out to make an album, abiding by one rule: everything the Brothers Griiin built from the ground up would have to also work in their high-energy DJ sets.

Though conjured as a party record, “Joy City” came together during two years of love, loss, depression, and aggression in a world ravaged by political and physical disease. Out May 13th. on Graveface Records, it’s deeply personal and a body of work that served as a point of focus, a vessel of energy and positivity to keep the Brothers afloat in intense times. Songs like “Joy City Part 1” (and Part 2!) and “Future Thoughts” are outlets of anger and gestures of love and support for marginalized members of their community.

“Joy City” features contributions from friends in the Flaming Lips, Zhu, Shiny Toy Guns, Spaceface, the Bright Light Social Hour, and more fostering a desperately needed sense of connection with friends around the world during the band’s isolation.
Kirksey and Ley’s respective musical lineages outside of the Lips comprise work with a number of high-profile and independent artists, including Miley Cyrus, Colourmusic, Phantogram, Kesha, The Chainsaw Kittens, Grace Potter, Particle Kid, and Stardeath and White Dwarfs, along with Graveface Records alumni Beachy Head, the Casket Girls, and Dreamend.
